The video for Britney Spears and Iggy Azalea’s “Pretty Girls” has landed. Or it has so totally landed, we should say. Almost a year after Fancy with Charli XCX began its seven-week reign atop the Billboard Hot 100 – Azalea teams up with the Princess of Pop (it’s Britney bitch!) to show off wild 80s haircuts and alien superpowers in their video for “Pretty Girls.”
Borrowing heavily from the 1988 Geena Davis cult classic Earth Girls Are Easy, Spears makes her official comeback (for real this time) by channeling her “I’m a Slave 4U” days in a leopard crop top and low rise jeans, while Azalea plays up her best valley girl accent in an ’80 style Canadian tux. The “pretty” girls spend their afternoon driving around in a convertible jeep, until they end up at a carwash full of men who dance around them while loads of cash pour out of an ATM. You know, just your average Saturday afternoon. In true “Oops I Did It Again” fashion, the video also includes a comedy interlude where the “Fancy” singer upgrades Spears’ outdated cellphone to a new Samsung with her alien powers. Not quite as impressive as retrieving the Titanic necklace from the bottom of the ocean, but it’ll do, right Brit?
While brainstorming the concept for the video, Spears’ made it clear that she just wanted to “let loose and not necessarily feel like she’s playing Britney Spears,” she said in an interview with USA Today. “She really wanted to do a video where she got to dress up and play a character,” Azalea adds. And while the Princess of Pop got to show off her dance moves like old times, Iggy admitted that it would be kind of obnoxious to direct a video and give herself a dance break (so, alien superpowers it is! No biggie).
Spears’ fave part of making the video? “Just us coming together with the clothes and doing the ‘80s haircuts. We were all about being characters, so it was kind of funny for us.” (We thought so too, Brit!)
