I’m almost sure that I’m not alone when I say that the Met Gala is one of my all-time favourite red carpet events. It’s outrageous annual themes encourage A-listers to experiment with some of the most avant-garde gowns, jumpsuits, (whatever Rihanna wore!) around, making it one of the most amusing events in the fashion industry. With a theme as complicated as “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between,” this year’s event promised to be no different. And with extravagant outfits comes over-the-top beauty looks to match, and this year, stars at the 2017 Met Gala really upped their beauty game.
Celebs like Rihanna, Cara and Selena stepped out of their comfort zones to give us draping, silver hair, red eye … and even pink eye – and I couldn’t be more impressed! Below, the top beauty trends from last night’s Met Gala.
EDGY TOP KNOTS
Yes, top knots have been done before, but Priyanka Chopra, Kate Hudson and Hailee Steinfeld took them to a whole new level at last night’s Met Gala. All three girls took a similar approach to the classic look, adding their own edgy twist with literally just that – a few twists. Hailee topped her twist with slicked back roots, while Priyanka and Kate left their knots slightly messy around the hairline. Bonus points to Kate who topped her look with silver spray for a more futuristic look! Her and Cara seemed to have the same idea, new colour trend anyone?
PINK MAKEUP
Selena Gomez and Rihanna won the red carpet with their hot pink shadow, blush, pretty-much-pink-everything looks, and I must say that after seeing them, I couldn’t be more excited that pink makeup is coming in hot for spring. Selena’s take was bold, but slightly subtler than Rihanna’s draping, which had hot pink blush spread across her cheeks, up to her temples and over her eyes (Oh, did I mention Rihanna is also wearing a top knot!?). Meanwhile, supermodel Taylor Hill lit up the red carpet (thanks to that killer highlight) with burgundy shadow surrounding her entire lids. I guess she isn’t technically wearing pink, but you get the idea. The verdict? Absolutely obsessed with all three looks!
BOBS & BUZZ CUTS
Bangs, bobs and buzz-cuts have been on-trend for a few seasons now – ever since women began embracing their individuality and straying away from conventional ideas of beauty. And last night, the look proved to be going strong, with it-girls like Bella, Kim K, Kylie and Cara embracing shorter locks that enhance the jawline. Bella and Kim’s shoulder-skimming do’s gave them a cleaner, and in Bella’s case, more mature look, while Kylie’s platinum blonde bob added a sense of strength to her face. Cara, in true Cara fashion, went all in, giving her buzz-cut a sleek, silvery upgrade finished off with diamond embellishments (she wins!)
CLASSIC RED LIPS
And in the midst of silver locks and complexions covered in pink was the classic red lip, because no matter how outrageous the theme, what would a red carpet be without a red lip? Kendall Jenner, who’s been known to keep it simple and classic, paired her wet-hair and sheer dress with a cherry red lip, while Nicki Minaj spiced things up a little with a touch of sparkle on her crimson pout. If there’s one thing we can learn from last night’s beauty looks it’s that you can always count on a red lip to add oomph to your look.
HEAVY EYELINER
I’ve always been a fan of the cat-eye, it’s my go-to whenever I’m trying to look more awake (which is always). So when Gigi, Emily Ratajkowski and Lily-Rose Depp each added their own individual touch to the classic flick for last night’s red carpet, you can only imagine how excited I was to try and re-create their looks. Let’s start off with Gigi. Not only did her one-eye-covering-side-bang add edge to her look, but it drew attention to her other eye, which was enhanced with bold, negative space liner surpassing her brows. Talk about graphic liner. Next up is Emily Ratajkowski, who complemented her Van Gogh Starry Night-inspired gown with a turquoise flick on her outer corners. And last, but definitely not least, is Lily-Rose, who showed us the true meaning of badass with her black liner and negative space points on the inner corners of her eyes. Why look any further for liner inspo?
